I was working at a bar. So was she. On our third date, she kissed me on the corner of my lips. We moved in together.

But I had a problem. I was addicted to gambling. All my money went into it. So at home, it got bad. Rotten eggs. An empty fridge. We even collected points on pizza boxes.

But she got me out of it. She saved me. And because of everything she had done for me, I asked her to marry me.

A few years in, she started having flashbacks of her grandfather molesting her. And I doubted her. I wasn’t there for her. She got really depressed. I suddenly had to take care of everything at home, and I started bossing her around. She was struggling. So was I. I just couldn’t fill that void she had in her. But I loved her—so much.

We needed a way out. She suggested Canada. Yes. That was the plan. But something was off. When we made love, it was brutal. “What is going on?” I asked. “I am cheating on you,” she said. I hadn’t gambled for three years, but that night, I gave someone fifty euros to play for me.

She said she regretted it and stayed.

The day before we left for Canada, we booked a room at the airport hotel. But she said she needed to be with him: “One last time.” I begged her not to go. She still did and came back the next morning.

The plane took off. I turned to her: “Charlotte, I am leaving you.” I just couldn’t do it anymore. And I bought a ticket for Guadeloupe.

Here I am now.

Lost.
